“LAS VEGAS – All guests were evacuated from the 32-story Monte Carlo Resort and Casino after a three-alarm fire broke out on the roof Friday, closing part of the Las Vegas Strip and snarling traffic as tourists flocked in for the weekend.

Live television video showed flames and plumes of black smoke spreading across the roof line from the center section of the 90,000-square-foot resort, which is home to more than 3,000 guest rooms and 256 luxury suites, including penthouse units on the flaming top floors, NBC affiliate KVBC reported.

Ambulances were sent to the scene, but there were no immediate reports of injuries, the station reported.

Officer Bill Cassell, a Las Vegas police spokesman, told MSNBC that Las Vegas and Clark County firefighters were slowed by the need to hand-carry fire hoses up the stairs from ground level because the fire was out of reach of ladders. Some firefighters could be seen on the roof, where the flames appeared to progressing to lower floors.

The fire was reported just before 11 a.m. (2 p.m. ET). Guests at the hotel, famed for its Renaissance statues and cascading fountains, were evacuated to the nearby Bellagio and New York, New York hotel-casinos.

MGM Mirage, the casino’s owner, had no immediate information about the blaze.” – MSNBC.com
