Memory Foam Mattress – Should You Build it Yourself?
V Montague asked:
Memory foam mattresses are all the rage nowadays and many people are already contemplating their second one. They like the way they sleep on the mattress but would like to correct some of the shortcomings of their first purchase. In some cases the memory foam topper was either too thick or too thin and would have provided a sinking feeling that was excessive or too much contact with the support layer creating too many pressure points. In other cases the memory foam layer was not the correct density.
Although there are many places online that allow you to order your latex mattress in parts and give you the ability to swap mattress components if they’re too soft or too hard, there are not that many stores that sell memory foam mattresses in a component format so you can build it yourself. The stores may have a variety of such mattresses from plush to firm but they do not have the option for you to swap out one foam topper for a different one. One of the reasons is that apart from the high end models offered by Tempurpedic and other visco elastic foam manufacturers that have mattresses with 3 or more layers, memory foam mattresses are generally simple affairs. There is a topper that is anywhere from 2 to 4 inches thick and a support foam layer that is greater then 5 inches in thickness. The range of choice is generally restricted to two, plush and firm.
One of the reasons for visco elastic foam mattress choices being simple is the fact that the sleep principle they are based on is simple. Ninety percent of the benefit provided by a memory foam mattress has to do with the topper. This part is usually the only part that is technically made of memory foam material. The support foam underneath is merely to provide support and the quality of materials used for this layer varies quite widely depending on mattress price and manufacturer. This is because it simply isn’t that much of a direct contributor toward the quality of sleep and so most manufacturers don’t pay too much attention to it. Therefore you will not find visco elastic foam mattress manufacturers or dealers offering “do it yourself” mattresses.
That being the case, the best way to put together a customized memory foam mattress is to research all the foam toppers available as best you can based on what you already have. Once you receive that topper you can usually peel away your existing unsatisfactory topper (even though it will be laminated) from the support layer and simply put the new one on top of the foundational foam. Then all you have to do is stuff them back in your existing zippered mattress cover or get a new one and you’re good to go.
