How To Wire A Scanner Made For Home Outlet To Work in A Car?
OceanUnit405 asked:
I have a base scanner that is made to plug into the wall outlet in a house. I want to put that scanner in my personal vehicle so I can always listen to the radio traffic of the PD I work for. I want it all to be mounted and wired so that all of the wires are hidden, I don’t want to have to plug it into the cigarette lighter or anything. How would I go about wiring this up? Do I need to add a fuse, what source do I tap the electricity from, what supplies will I need, how should I route the wires? I’m planning on mounting it under the dash to the right of the steering wheel. Thanks.
I already said above that I don’t want any wires hanging out, it all needs to have the wires hidden away. I don’t want anything plugged into the cigarette lighter.

I would just let the experts at Circuit City hook it up for you.

Check the manual on your scanner, they usually have an optional adapter that allows you to get power from teh cigarette lighter.
If there is no option then you need to get a 110VAC source. Your car supplies 12VDC power. You will need to go to an electronics shop and purchase an inverter that converts 12VDC to 110-120VAC.
