This completely depends on your living room set-up and style. In my opinion rectangular tables go with just about living room set. As far as the composition, glass is definately more modern or contemporary.

i agree, it does depend on your living room set up, but if is a couch that turns {to look like an L} then i say either square or rectangular. but i would use a squared coffee table

I personally do not like coffee tables, every house has one. A couple of things to remember, glass will always be harder to keep clean and wood stains without coasters.

It all depends, is it in a living room or a family room, do you have young kids or young kids that come over often that would be able to smack their head on the corner of a square one? What style are you going for? I personally use large ottomans for my family room and living room coffee tables and in the living room I got a wooden tray to put on it so that people could bring their drinks into the room and have a place to set them.

Square tables tend to be stuffy and formal. Whereas round is welcoming to all whatever the position.Round will give a air of freedom and equality to a space.Wood always.Glass can be fussy adn dangerous and most unsettling to visitors and inhibits interaction as it represents fuss and distance.Like look but dare you too touch..Hands off approach with caution.Mentally the follow on effect is unwelcoming.
