Best afforadable wood choice for building a coffee table?

I’m going to build a coffee table that will be stained a dark color. What is the best choice if I’m trying to save money and and hoping to stick with solid wood? I’d like to spend about 40 dollars or less on the wood portion for on a 30″ by 30″ table of a normal height. Is this realistic? Thanks for any suggestions!

The problem is, it’s a soft wood.
With 40 bucks, you might be able to build a table out of pine and have enough money to put a mahogany laminate on the top. Stain the rest to match.

Since it will have a dark stain, might consider poplar.
Not the hardest wood , nor the most beautiful, but it machines well & is fairly strong.
Does not have strong grain patterns , but you can get some interesting variations in color .
Often used as framing for furniture, cabinets & as the base wood for veneered pieces.
Oak & cherry could be in your $40 range if you use poplar for structure that does not have to match .
Cheapest would be pine .
“Select” pine is not all that cheap , is soft & still looks like pine.

I buy wood for furniture projects all the time. I don’t want to rain on your parade but you are going to be hard pressed to buy enough good wood of any variety for $40 to make a coffee table.
A half sheet of 3/4″ plywood veneered in oak, birch, maple or other decorative wood is going to cost that much. A cheap set of pre-made legs will probably wipe out $40.

Go to your local mill or hardwoods dealer (not a big box home center) and see what they have specials on. You can often get less popular / less known woods for very little money: Kentucky Coffee Tree, Soft Maple, Sycamore, Ash, etc. Red Oak is also at a historic low demand right now and many dealers are getting rid of it below their cost. They might also have a small bin of some other species they’re clearing out.

look for a lower grade cherry, most lumber companies will carry what they call a #1, 2 or 3 common.
#1 being the better, a few more knots, but they can be cut out or worked around.
